TEF: And the Good News Is…

Tomball high school students and their families are to be applauded! But it’s hard to be humble when planning and hard work lead to success.

There are nearly 25,000 public high schools in the United States. In September 2023, all three Tomball ISD high schools were included in the prestigious U.S. News & World Report annual ranking of U.S. Best High Schools. Criteria for the ratings included state performance assessments and how well the schools’ students are prepared for college.

Tomball Star Academy was rated highest. The school placed in the top 2% in the nation and was ranked 69th place in the State of Texas and eighteenth among Houston-area schools. Tomball Memorial High School placed in the top 6% of U.S. schools and Tomball High School is among the top 11% of best U.S. high schools.

Tomball Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Martha Salazar-Zamora cited our dedicated teachers and staff “…who are focused on a relentless pursuit of constant growth and fostering a high-quality learning environment for all students.” She said in addition to our educators’ efforts, a high level of community support has allowed Tomball to cultivate a premier educational experience.

National AP Honor Roll Recognizes Tomball Memorial High School

The Advanced Placement Honor Roll recognizes schools that demonstrate a commitment to a college-bound culture. There are 4 levels of recognition: bronze, silver, gold, and platinum. The placement assessments include full-time high school enrollment in the U.S. or Canada plus meeting the following criteria:

  • 40%+ graduating high school students took at least 1 AP exam
  • 25%+ graduating high school students scored 3 or higher on at least one AP exam
  • 2%+ graduating high school students took 5 or more AP exams

In September 2023, Tomball Memorial High School was awarded bronze AP Honor Roll status for the 2022-2023 school year. Once again, our Wildcats have earned respect by striving for excellence.

Tomball ISD Martha Salazar-Zamora TASB Superintendent of the Year

Texas Association of School Boards named TISD’s Martha Salazar-Zamora 2023 Superintendent of the Year in September. The committee cited her commitment to helping all students succeed, regardless of circumstances or zip code and said it was particularly impressed with Salazar-Zamora’s approach to finding creative and innovative solutions.

There are 1,200 school districts in Texas. “We were all so impressed by Dr. Salazar-Zamora’s unmatched energy, enterprising spirit, and commitment to serving her students and community,” committee chair Rolinda Schmidt (Kerrville ISD) said.  “She is truly an advocate for her students and for creating opportunities for them to achieve their goals.”

In August, Salazar-Zamora was also named one of Houston’s 30 most influential women. She is the first female Hispanic superintendent of Tomball ISD. She has served in management and leadership positions in Houston, Kingsville, Round Rock, and Spring school districts.
